Weekend Editor Needed

The Durango Herald, a seven-day morning newspaper in spectacular Southwest Colorado, has an opening for a weekend editor. The person selected for this full-time position will do a combination of copy editing and page designing. The primary duties during weekday shifts will include copy editing local and AP stories, and designing news pages, feature pages and 1A. On the weekend, the candidate will need to have the ability to edit local stories. The weekend editor will take a role in overseeing the production of weekend newspapers. The position includes weekends but this may rotate as needed. Required experience includes at least three years of experience as copy editor and as page designer, and at least 1 year experience as a story editor or reporter. A degree in journalism is preferred. Candidates must demonstrate a strong grasp of journalism writing, editing, headline writing, AP style and have exceptional grammar, spelling and fact-checking skills. The candidate must have strong design skills for both news pages and feature pages. Software skills should include Quark XPress, Adobe Photoshop, Microsoft Word; knowledge of Adobe Illustrator is helpful but not required. Working knowledge of InDesign is an acceptable substitute for Quark XPress.

Special Publications Editor

The Durango Herald is seeking a full-time Editorial Writer for its special publications magazines and Feature sections. Qualifying candidates must be able to plan, coordinate and produce special editorial and content in collaboration with graphic designers. Applying individuals must meet the following requirements:
• Ability to produce fresh project content and content ideas for local editorial
• Must have excellent grammar skills, highly organized and dependable
• The ability to work within a team environment under stringent deadlines
• Experience in page layout and design utilizing Quark XPress
• Experience with Microsoft word, Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator
• Must have confident people skills and communications skills

Colorado sports editor

The Cortez Journal seeks a sports editor to cover high school and rec-league sports, outdoor recreation, rodeos and other Southwest Colorado sports-related activities.

The Journal is a family-owned, 3x/week, 7,000-circulation community newspaper. The publication received top awards for general excellence this year from the Associated Press and Colorado Press Association.

The Journal is preparing to launch a redesigned Web site and publish a Monday-through-Saturday online edition. The sports editor must be able to meet daily deadlines and should have a desire to work with online content that ranges from athletic events to special sections.

Frequent and positive reader interaction is a must. The successful applicant will have a degree in journalism or related field and a proven ability to cover sports.

Southwest Colorado, where Cortez is located, ranges from high desert country to San Juan Mountain peaks rising more than 14,000 feet. Residents here enjoy hiking, mountain biking, four-wheeling, camping, fly fishing, hunting, skiing, kayaking, river rafting and other activities. Mesa Verde National Park is next door, and southern Utah’s canyon country is a short drive away.
