The Bayfield High School baseball team opened the Intermountain League season on Saturday with a doubleheader sweep of Ignacio.
The Wolverines, playing on their home field for the first time this season, stopped the
Bobcats 15-5 in the first game and 18-0 in the nightcap.
"Our pitching was on (Saturday)," said Bayfield head coach Ken Hibbard. "I like the way we
bounced back from Friday's game."
Bayfield dropped a nonleague game at Kirtland Central 7-0 on Friday, while struggling at the
plate. And the Wolverines trailed 4-0 early in Saturday's first game before their offense kicked in and the pitching
took over.
"Everyone played; everyone contributed," Hibbard said as Bayfield improved to 2-0 in the IML
and 7-2 overall.
Michael McGraw pitched the opener for Bayfield, allowing only four hits. He struck out 11 in
the game shortened to five innings by the 10-run rule.
Jeff Huffmyer led the offense with a home run in the opener. Jamie Tinnin was 2-for-3, and
Logan Funkhouser was 3-for-4 for the Wolverines.
Anthony Porambo led Ignacio with a towering home run in the first game.
Huffmyer took the mound in the second game, pitching a five-inning complete game. He allowed
only one hit and struck out 11.
Huffmyer had three hits, including a double and a triple in the nightcap.
Tinnin had three more hits; Funkhouser and McGraw added two more hits each.
"We got to play a home game," Hibbard said, crediting a volunteer effort to prepare the field
after the long, snowy winter.
"And we had a good turnout (Saturday)," Hibbard added.
Ignacio, 3-3 overall and 0-2 in the IML, will play a nonleague doubleheader against the
Durango JV team Monday.
BHS will host Centauri in an IML doubleheader next Saturday.
