A woman fired a shot inside Denny's Restaurant on Monday before laying her gun on the counter and walking out with her hands up.
The woman, who police would not identify, fired one shot inside the restaurant at 666 Camino
del Rio, according to police accounts of witness statements.
No one was injured, and customers and staff escaped.
Police swarmed around the restaurant, at 666 Camino del Rio, after receiving a report at 4:40
p.m. of a woman inside armed with a gun. Officers diverted traffic around Camino del Rio between College Drive and
Eighth Street.
The woman, wearing blue jeans, a dark shirt and white sneakers, wandered around the
restaurant, looking out the windows as police tried to communicate with her.
Durango Police Department Sgt. Rita Warfield used a speakerphone to tell the woman to answer
the phone at Denny's.
She did, and Warfield could be heard telling the woman: "This is the only way we can work
this out."
After speaking with Warfield, the woman cautiously approached the door of Denny's with her
hands up. She walked out at 5:15 p.m. and was handcuffed by officers who had their guns drawn.
The woman, complying with a police request, had left a gun on the counter, where
investigators recovered it.
Traffic was restored to Camino del Rio at 5:20 p.m.
Warfield interviewed the woman in a police car before the suspect was transferred to another
vehicle and taken to Mercy Regional Medical Center for evaluation.
